What God Continues to Do

What God Continues to Do

Recently I had the privilege of travelling to support Christian schooling in Indonesia and Sri Lanka. The settings were, in some ways, typical of the diversity that we can see across Christian school contexts. But they also had striking similarities.

Elsadai Christian School in Batam, Indonesia, is such a ministry of the heart. The new principal, Asri, is young, discerning and keen to see her students learn well, in Christ. Her staff and parents were keen participants in the sessions that Annette Cadwallader (Missions Director, Pacific Hills Christian School) and I ran.

Mawar Sharon Christian School in Surabaya is a miracle to behold. In just thirteen years, its leaders (Febe and Rinni) have built a school of great heart, numbers and facilities. The leadership sessions were not only engaging, but fun (like much of what we had the privilege to do). Annette and I again were received with warmth, enthusiasm and great hospitality.

Kings International College in Ja-ela, Sri Lanka is a place of persistent faithfulness. Pastor Vernon, and his daughter Dinali, have laboured in love for some time, and have been building a place of acceptance and learning for the families in that district. The young female teachers fell in love with Bethany Francis, who brought creativity alive in front of their eyes.

In all three places, we journeyed together to explore what God’s Word can teach us as Christians together, and what that can mean to us in the classroom. It was a genuine privilege to study the Bible and ask, “What does this mean for what we teach and how we teach it?”
Thank you, God.

Community

Community

Relationships are all there is. Everything in the universe only exists because it is in relationship to everything else. Nothing exists in isolation. We have to stop pretending we are individuals that can go it alone.

~ Margaret J. Wheatley (American writer and management consultant)

We were not created to live simply for ourselves. God called us to live out the Christian life in the midst of society, dealing with the problems and issues of the larger community in a Godly manner.

Christian schools are communities of believers. Community comes from the Latin, com, coming together. In a Christian School we have people who come together to share the common belief that:
God is Lord, He is our risen Saviour, He died for our sins that we might be forgiven and restored to Him. Lam Kuo Yung, in his book, Together Alive, suggests that a true community exhibits the following characteristics:

  1. Does things together, and enjoys being together. They adjust their lifestyle to incorporate all kinds of together time
  2. Helps one another, and derives joy from it
  3. Consults one another on important decisions
  4. Practices hospitality
  5. Share one another’s burdens as we suffer together

I can highly recommend a closer look at this booklet.
