Perpetual Learning in Professional Development

Perpetual Learning in Professional Development

Perpetual Learning in Professional Development By Tina Lamont

This was a new term for me. Perpetual Learning?

Well – it is another term for life-long learning. As school leaders we need our staff to be aware that this is a skill that School Leadership not only values but is perceived as a necessity in today’s society. This is the number one skill that will keep our schools relevant, regardless of what the future may look like.

Today if you want to learn a new skill you will probably consult YouTube. I recently had a problem with a blockage in the bathroom sink. So, YouTube was my first thought and I successfully unblocked the sink and saved the cost of a plumber. I learned a new skill. Sure, I had to watch the demonstration a few times, but I was engaged in the learning because it was relevant, easily accessible and affordable. So School Leadership is also aware that any Professional Learning activity needs to be relevant, engaging, easily accessible and affordable.

So, how are schools going to be continually relevant in the areas of Professional Learning for staff? I think PD designers have to be future focused but also live in the now. As I read I am very much aware how fast technology is invading our learning spaces. The newly growing area of technology is AI (Artificial Intelligence) and automation.

I immediately have a few questions:

  1. Where is AI going to replace tasks previously labour intensive?
  2. Will Schools be able to focus on the unique skill set that humans possess? Things like creativity, innovation, complex problem solving, communication, empathy and compassion.
  3. Will our Christian schools advocate the relevance of the gospel in a world filled with AI?
  4. Can we be leaders of excellence in this field?
