David Smith is Director of the Kuyper’s Institute for Christian Teaching and Learning and Director of Graduate Studies in Education at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Mi. He has written widely on the relationship between faith and education, and serves as editor of the International Journal of Christianity and Education.
We were blessed to have him visit us at TEC to present a seminar as a part of our “Schools Learning Together” Series. His talk was entitled, Teaching and Christian Practices: Reshaping Faith and Learning.
His talk began with reference to the book by Étienne Wenger called “Communities of Practice: Learning, Meaning, and Identity”. The book presents a framework for communities and teachers to improve the learning of their students using a social theory of learning that is groundbreaking yet accessible. It has profound implications for researchers, teachers and parents. Smith’s material focussed on learning that maximized new meaning for students and the development of their identity.
